Music | Music Director Michael C. Haigler, Music Director
Conductor, composer, organist, and pianist Michael C. Haigler began at Christ Church Oyster Bay in January 2005 as an Interim, but became the permanent Music Director shortly thereafter. He came to Christ Church after Music Director posts at St. Andrew's Episcopal in Staten Island, St. Timothy's in Calhoun, GA, and the Church of the Ascension in his hometown of Cartersville, GA. Since he is off-contract from Christ Church during the summer, Mr. Haigler often serves interim positions at other churches, most recently with Holy Trinity Episcopal in Decatur, Georgia.
Mr. Haigler's musical life is by no means limited to church music, as he also holds positions as Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor of the Bronx Opera Company, Associate Conductor of the newly formed Seniors Orchestral Society of New York, and founding Music Director of "Festival 56", now Illinois' largest summer theater festival. Additionally, he writes the hymnody column for Synthesis, a monthly liturgical publication for clergy and church musicians. As a freelance conductor, and has recently led productions withthe Seniors Orchestral Society of New York, the Bronx Opera Company, Concerts at Christ Church, Park Avenue Synagog, the Opera Company of Brooklyn, The New York Metro Vocal Arts Ensemble (NYC), and the Lehman College Drama Department (Bronx). Earlier positions include composer-in-residence with the Goliard Chamber Ensemble, artist-in-residence with the University of Tennessee (Knoxville), assistant conductor withAtlanta Opera (GA) and Knoxville Opera (TN), guest conductor of the Sarasota Pops Orchestra, visiting artist with the Virginia Opera, and four years with the Sarasota Opera (FL): two years as Associate Conductor, and two years as Music Director of their prestigious Youth Opera program.In 2001 Mr. Haigler was chosen as one of eight conductors out of over 350 applicants as a finalist in the North American division of Lorin Maazel's International conducting competition for aspiring young conductors. He has also won many awards as a pianist and composer, including the prestigious Atlanta Steinway Society competition, and the Van Cliburn Award as a pianist at the National Music Camp at Interlochen, and various other educational scholarships throughout his studies.Mr. Haigler has been an active composer throughout his life (see below for samples), and has written numerous hymn arrangements, anthems, and psalm settings. In recent years he has received commissions from the Goliard Chamber Ensemble (Queens), the Yale University Bluedogs (CT), and Irving Park Lutheran Church in Chicago. He has also written two musicals with fellow thesbian Dexter Brigham, both of which have received performances at Festival 56. Other works include the song cycle Your World for mezzo soprano and small ensemble, a neo-romantic setting of Ave Maria, and a piano-string trio. He is currently working to complete his second piano concerto, and a volume of festival descants and harmonies for popular hymns.Mr. Haigler lives in upper Manhattan with his lovely and talented wife, pianist Arielle Levioff.Contact Information:Michael C.
